What is Umfundalai?
Umfundalai is a contemporary African dance technique shaped by movement traditions from across the African Diaspora. The word “Umfundalai” comes from Kiswahili and means “essential,” which reflects the heart of the practice. Inspired by Katherine Dunham’s legacy, Dr. Kariamu Welsh, the progenitor of Umfundalai, shaped a movement practice that reflects the essence of African-centered dance. She described it as a wholistic, body-focused, and organic approach to movement, honoring rhythm, expression, and cultural roots.” Learn more here.
Join us as we close out 2025 with a special donation-based Umfundalai contemporary African dance class on Wednesday, December 10, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
After class, stay to mingle and connect with the Raediant Movement community.
This year-end class directly supports our mission to keep our doors open so we can continue creating meaningful art and community-centered experiences.
